And I Said Nothing
In Germany
They first came for the communists and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a communist.
Then they came for the Jews, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew.
Then they came for the trade-unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a trade unionist.
Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I was a Protestant.
Then they came for me–– and by that time no one was left to speak up.
-- Pastor Martin Niemoller, 1945
And I Said Nothing (Revisited)
In the United States
They first came for the ARAB AMERICANS
and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t Arab American.
Then they came for people from MUSLIM countries and I didn’t speak up because I was born in the U.S. Then they profiled PEOPLE OF COLOR as terrorist suspects and I didn’t speak up because I must not look like a terrorist.
Then they targeted IMMIGRANTS, and I didn’t speak up because I have legal status. Then they arrested SOCIAL JUSTICE ACTIVISTS and I didn’t speak up because I was afraid to get involved. Then they came for YOU AND ME– – and by that time no one was left to speak up.
